MONUMENTAL SITZENDORF FLOWER BASKET CENTREPIECE

Price
£699.00

Germany, Thuringia | Second half of the 19th century

A rare example of 19th-century German decorative porcelain, created by the renowned Sitzendorf manufactory in Thuringia, one of the most important centres of European porcelain production.

An exceptionally fine porcelain composition, entirely modelled and painted by hand, showcasing the outstanding sculptural artistry of the period. The elaborate basket form is richly adorned with three-dimensional floral decoration, with each flower and leaf individually modelled and delicately hand-painted in subtle layers of colour. The elegant handles, formed as intertwined branches with foliage, enhance the lightness and sculptural quality of the piece.

The central figures are winged musical putti playing wind instruments — a characteristic decorative motif found in 19th-century German porcelain. The expressive modelling of the figures, finely painted faces and meticulous attention to detail demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of the Sitzendorf manufactory.

A superb collector’s piece in excellent overall condition, with only minor imperfections consistent with age and no evidence of restoration.
