VICTORIAN RARITY — ENGLISH STILTON CHEESE DISH 1860s–1870s

Price
£0.00

Attributed to Wedgwood, made in the traditional blue Jasperware technique.

The rich white relief decoration provides a striking contrast against the deep blue ground. Classical figures, trees and ornamental motifs cover the body, while the lid and base are framed with elegant garlands of oak leaves and acorns — one of the most recognisable motifs of 19th-century English Jasperware.

The lid is particularly interesting, with ventilation holes surrounding the finial, allowing the cheese to breathe. Such details can be found on surviving Victorian Stilton cheese dishes.

The white decoration is applied in finely moulded relief, with delicate leaves, acorns, figures and ornamental details creating an almost sculptural surface.

Remarkably well preserved for an object around 150 years old, with almost all of the intricate relief decoration intact. The lower dish has only a small loss to part of one oak-leaf element, together with minimal natural signs of age.
