COLLECTIBLE COALPORT (COALBROOKDALE) LIDDED VASE

Price
£0.00

England, early 19th century

Before you is an exceptionally rare and highly artistic example of English porcelain from the early Coalport period, created at a time when the Coalbrookdale factory was at the height of its craftsmanship and working closely with the traditions of Derby and early Sèvres.

The vase is executed in a monumental, ceremonial format, with a lid, paired handles and a richly moulded base in the late Baroque style with rocaille elements.

The body of the vase is entirely decorated with multifaceted landscape and floral painting:

• on each side — different pictorial scenes, executed in a delicate, multi-layered manner, with depth and perspective;

• the landscapes are complemented by abundant floral garlands that encircle the vase along its entire perimeter;

• the painting continues on the sides, shoulders and even on the lid, which is a hallmark of the highest-grade pieces and is not found on ordinary forms.

Sculptural work and modelling

The exceptionally intricate hand-modelling deserves special attention:

• every flower, bud and leaf is modelled by hand, with no repeated forms;

• the petals are multi-layered, with natural movement and curves;

• the handles are shaped like winding branches, complete with leaves and flowers — a technique characteristic of the most expensive Coalport pieces from the early 19th century;

• the base is decorated in the Rococo style with shells, soft scrolls and gilded accents.

This is not merely decorative modelling — it is a sculptural composition framing the form, which required the collaboration of several craftsmen.

Dimensions and proportions

Height: 27.5 cm

Width (from handle to handle): approx. 18 cm

The size clearly places it among the large collector’s pieces created for state interiors and display cabinets.

Condition and marks

Condition: good antique condition, unrestored, which is particularly important for items of such intricate moulding.

Features:

• two kiln cracks:

• one in the collar area near the lid;

• the second on the underside at the back, in the area of the mark.

Both cracks are typical of early Coalport, having arisen during the firing process; they are not the result of damage and do not compromise the integrity or collectible value of the item.

Mark:

• underglaze, cobalt, located on the base;

• additional marking is present under the lid, confirming authenticity and period correctness.
